The one sector that is the worst hit due to the Corona lockdown is the petroleum sector. Due to the lockdown, the vehicular movement is severely restricted and as a result, only a handful of vehicles are on the roads. The personal transport has come to a grinding halt.
As a result, the petrol sales have come down by 61 per cent during the month of April, which was completely under the lockdown. Similarly, the diesel sales have come down by 56 per cent. Though the situation has slightly improved in Lockdown 2.0 due to certain relaxations given by the government, the overall situation is still bleak. With the lockdown extending into the third week of May, the situation is not likely to improve any further. Even the jet fuel, needed for running flight services, too has gone down by 91 per cent. Only recently, some cargo flights are being allowed to ply. But, the situation is not likely to improve till the passenger flights are allowed.
Meanwhile, the sale of LPG cylinders has gone up considerably. With people remaining in lockdown and everyone resorting to cooking at home, the consumption of LPG cylinders has gone up by 12 per cent, said LPG supply and distribution companies. On the whole, except this silver-lining, everything else on the fuel front looks completely bleak.
