The Visakha Steel Plant (VSP) holds a special place in the Vizag region as well as Andhra Pradesh. The plant was set up as a result of decades of agitations and protests.

However, the decision to privatize the steel plant from the union government came as a rude shock to the people of the shore city. This led to protests in the region.

Several unions, including the Rasthtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) have slammed the decision and carried a huge rally in Vizag on Friday, demanding the centre to take back the decision.

TDP MLA, former Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has also joined the protests and resigned from the MLA post. He has sent his resignation letter to the Assembly speaker today.

The legislator said that he resigned from his post to protest against the centre's decision to privatize the Vizag Steel Plant. He requested the Speaker to accept his resignation on the day, Centre's decisions on the steel plant come into affective.

The MLA took to microblogging site Twitter to demand the centre to take back the decision. Vizag steel plant is not like any other manufactories in the country. It is the soul and self-respect of Vizag, the MLA said.
