A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Monday awarded death penalty to Anique Syed and Akbar Ismail Choudhary for planting bombs at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat in 2007. Third Convict in the case Tariq Anjum has been sentenced to life imprisonment for offering shelter to masterminds Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal.
When the Judge asked the convicts if they have anything to say, Anique and Akbar complained charges leveled against them are false. Whereas, Tariq claimed to have no idea who are Bhatkal Brothers.
Court acquitted Mohammed Sadiq and Ansar Ahmed as the charges against them haven't been proved.
Bomb Blasts at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat on August 25th, 2007 killed 43 people. Three other accused (Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, Amir Raza) are still absconding. Court maintained that Case would continue if any of these accused are arrested.
