The argument that Tax Incentives offered to States accorded with Special Category Status willn't be continued after GST roll out has been proven wrong. Four days ago, Union Cabinet took a decision extending Tax Incentives offered to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir under Special Status for a period 10 Years. Though GST is implement, These States will receive Tax Incentives from July 1st this year to March 31st, 2017. Centre has allotted Rs 27,413 crore for the same and as many as 4,284 companies will get benefitted from it.
On February 20th, 2014, Then PM Manmohan Singh announced Special Status to residuary AP for a period of 5 years in Rajya Sabha. BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi promised to implement it during the public meeting in Tirupati. Sadly, BJP didn't fulfill the promise citing lame excuses like recommendations of 14th Finance Commission.
Analysts say, TDP Government which was supposed to fight for Special Status got compromised on the interests of AP because of cash-for-vote case. Instead of fighting for the cause, AP Government foiled every attempt made by the Opposition Parties, Students and Film Celebs to intensify the movement by terming it as a closed chapter and using police force to suppress the protests. TDP Leaders could have at least fought for availing Tax Incentives. What explanation does they offer for the latest move of Union Cabinet?
