Has the Corona virus undergone mutations in India? The Indian Council of Medical Research is now trying to investigate this question. The ICMR wants to understand this as the efficacy of the vaccine will depend on the mutation in the virus strain. According to senior scientist from ICMR, researches are now on into the possible mutations in Covid 19 virus.
The ICMR scientists are now studying samples collected from 19 patients. Depending on the country from which the patients arrived in India, there could be different strains of Corona virus. At least three Corona strains have been identified. One is from Wuhan in China, while the others are from Iran and Italy. The enzyme system in all these three strains are similar, hence the vaccine would be equally effective on all the three strains, say the scientists. Initially it was believed that there are no mutations so far in the virus strain. However, the scientists are now examining samples from 19 patients to see if there are any new strains that have developed of late.
As many as six Indian companies are now working to develop a vaccine for Covid 19. Though 70 vaccines were tested, only three have come up to the clinical trials stage. But, in any event, a vaccine would not be possible till at least 2021.
