Dr Gaurav Sharma (33), a native of Hamirpur district, working as a General Practitioner in Nawton, was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Hamilton West in New Zealand on October 17.

He won the election as a Labour Party candidate from Hamilton West and defeated Tim Macindoe of the National Party by over 4,386 votes. This was his second attempt. Sharma earlier fought the elections in 2017.

Sharma hails from Hareta village, 22 km from Hamirpur. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Sunday congratulated Sharma on the victory.

Gaurav Sharma was born on July 1, 1987 and when he was in Class 9, his family moved to New Zealand. Sharma's father, who used to work as an executive engineer in the electricity board of Himachal Pradesh, had taken pre-mature retirement and shifted to New Zealand.
