How Bengaluru Beat Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai?

Update: 2020-06-18 03:18 GMT
Mumbai has 60228 positive cases and 3167 deaths. Delhi has 44688 cases and 1837 deaths. Chennai has 34245 cases and 422 deaths. But, Bengaluru, a city that equals all these three cities, has just 827 cases and only 43 deaths. How did Bengaluru achieve this miracle?

The secret lies in Chief Minister Yeddiyurappa's tireless planning and perfect execution. The Karnataka government is quarantining all positive cases and is identifying all the contacts within 24 hours. This strategy has led to effective and speedy containment. Most other metros have not managed to do this. Hence there is a crisis in those cities. The Bengaluru has succeeded in retrospective tracing of all contacts. This has helped in controlling the spread of the pandemic.  In fact, during the shutdown from March 8 to May 31, there were just 358 cases and 10 deaths. Since the phased lifting of the lockdown, there have been 469 cases and 33 deaths. One of the reasons why Karnataka succeeded is that while the national average contact tracing is 20 per positive case, the state has identified 93 contacts per case. Interestingly, the number of contacts per positive case in high-risk states like Maharashtra and Delhi is a paltry eight and nine respectively. Also, the officials have succeeded in restricting Corona cases in three major containment zones - Badarayanapura,Hongasandra and Shivajinagar.

Early closure of big markets too has helped cut the spread of the pandemic in Karnataka. In contract, the Koyambed market in Chennai was shutdown only after the disease has spread considerably. This, in essence is Karnataka's success story.
