India sees biggest slump in single-day Covid-19 cases in over five months

After witnessing more than 40,000 Corona infections for three days, India reported the highest single-day infections in more than five months with as many as 53,476 new coronavirus cases. India's toll of infections rose to 1,17,87,534.
Over the past few weeks, India has been registering fresh infections at an alarming level. Compared to Wednesday, India witnessed a hike of 13 percent in fresh cases. The other day India added 47,262 new cases.
Maharashtra is constantly contributing to the daily spike in fresh infections in the country. The state tally of infections surged to 25,64,881 after reporting not less than 31,855 new infections in 24 hours.
According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry, after Maharashtra, Punjab, Kerala, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh are the other severely affected states and these states are reporting the highest spike in fresh infections.
The fresh infections were reported, a day after Centre said 771 variants, including a double mutant strain, were detected in 18 states in the country. More than 10,000 samples were tested and the variants were detected.
