The Central government of India has released guidelines for vaccine distribution and management in the country. At the same time, the Serum Institute of India (SII), a front-runner in vaccine development, has also made a key announcement.

Serum Institute of India's CEO Adar Poonawalla has said vaccination drive in India may begin by January 2021 as his company is hoping to get emergency-use authorisation by December end.

"We might get emergency license by this month-end, but licence for wider use might come at a later date. But, we are confident that if the regulators give a nod, India's vaccination drive can start by January 2021," Poonawalla said.

He also said the centre plans to vaccinate 20-30 per cent of the country's population in the first phase and have 300-400 million doses ready by July 2021. After the vaccination of 20 per cent, public confidence will be boosted and he hopes the vaccines will be available to everyone by September-October next year

The Center is reportedly planning to use the electoral body for a massive program to provide nearly 60 crore corona vaccine doses to the public over the next six to eight months.
