Has Union Home Minister Amit Shah fallen out of Modi's favour? It appears so. These days, Modi seems to be consulting other ministers more than Mota Bhai (Amit Shah's nick name). One look at the seating arrangement in the video conferences and cabinet meetings of Modi proves this. Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman are seated next to Modi and not Amit Shah.
If highly placed sources are to be believed, Modi was not been very happy with the way Amit Shah handled the anti-CAA, NRC and NPR protests. There is a growing feeling that Amit Shah's abrasive comments have propelled the people to take to the streets. Also, the massive communal riots in Eastern Delhi during the visit of US President Donald Trump also dented Modi Government's image considerably. Since the Delhi riots, Amit Shah has not been very visible. He is only operating behind the curtains. Interestingly, it was not Amit Shah but Rajnath Singh, who headed the 15 member inter-ministerial committee coordinating with the state governments on Covid 19. All these show that Modi is having second thoughts about Amit Shah's abilities in handling crises.
Sources, however, say that despite all this, Modi is still in regular touch with Amit Shah. Both talk to each other frequently on every issue. Some analysts say that Amit Shah's exile is temporary. Once the Covid issue settles down, Mota Bhai will rebound, they say.
