Down but not out... This is the mood in the Congress Party in Telangana. The party, which had put up its worst ever performance till date is limited to just 19 seats in the new Assembly. Its ally TDP has two seats. In the last assembly, the TDP had 15 and the Congress 21. Despite the alliance, the total number of opposition MLAs is just 24. Of this one is BJP's Raja Singh and two independents have already joined the TRS. At least one of the TDP MLA is likely to join the TRS. Meanwhile, there are rumours that at least nine of the 19 Congress MLAs too might switch over to the TRS.
Despite this, the Congress Party is planning to fight on. It is now looking at two immediate battles. One is the panchayat elections, which might be held in February and the Lok Sabha polls, which are likely in April. The party is looking to regain some of its lost prestige by winning as many panchayat seats as possible. This is important for the party as the winners in the panchayat elections will form the bulwark of the party's organisational strength. It is also looking to constest all seats in the Lok Sabha.
Already Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who has just lost the assembly elections from Nalgonda, said he is ready to fight from Nalgonda Lok Sabha elections on Congress ticket. He said he will always remain among the people and would work for them. With Komatireddy throwing the hat in the ring, more and more seniors are expected to announce their candidature in the days to come.
