On the morning of April 14, Kurnool has suffered a great loss as one of its great sons, Dr Ismail Hussain died of coronavirus.
We are aware that Kurnool town has been in the throes of COVID-19. Even the fear of death was evident everywhere, the people of Kurnool was least prepared to receive the news of Dr Ismail Hussain death.
This news has hit the people like more than anything as their beloved Doctor Saab, whose consultation fee most of the time was no more than bidding a salaam was declared dead of Coronavirus.
Dr Ismail Hussain was a product of Kurnool Medical College, and he performed duties as Principal of Dr Abdul Haq Unani Medical College, Kurnool for some time.
He was very famous in the Kurnool District for his relentless services to the people. Throughout his life, he never expected money while practising.
This great doctor got infected with the deadly virus while he was treating the patients who are standing in long queues at his nursing home. He may have treated them like a regular patient without inquiring that anyone had visited any religious congregation the previous month.
Dr Ismail Hussain's motto was treatment first, fee later. He used to take Rs 2 if the patient could pay, which earned him the name "2 Rupee Doctor". His clinic opened in the late afternoon and won't be closed until the last patient was taken care of.
There are no certain timings for Dr Ismail's clinic. A cardboard box was kept on the table and the choice was left to the patients to drop the money or not, and people who don't have money leaves the place just bidding salaam.
His son, Dr Iqbal Hussain is settled as an Associate Professor at Kurnool Medical College and One son-in-law Imtiaz, is an IAS officer and the Collector of Krishna district.
Ironically, Kurnool's most popular doctor was cremated at midnight the next day as per the government protocol in the presence of six family members. If it had been an ordinary day, a lakh of people might have participated in the funeral. Now, thousands of people regretted having had no occasion to give a send-off to the great son of Kurnool.
