Legislative Council: Son Undoing What Father Did

Update: 2020-01-27 06:38 GMT
One of the major changes that happened after late YSR came to power in 2004 was the revival of the legislative council. It was earlier abolished by NTR as it was becoming an obstacle to him in governance.

The chief reason for YSR's decision to revice the council, it was said, was that he wanted to rehabilitate the seniors and those who could not win the 2004 elections. The government had then nominated some public intellectuals and got some seniors elected. The council became a reality three years after YSR became the CM.

Though YSR did not make any MLC a minister, Kiran Kumar Reddy, who became  the CM after  Rosaiah, made some MLCs ministers. In Chandrababu Naidu's time, several MLCs were made ministers. Interestingly, Chandrababu, who always opposed the council, made his son Lokesh Babu a minister through the council route. Several key leaders like Yanamala, Narayana and Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy were made ministers using the council route.

Now, there are at least two ministers in Jagan's cabinet, who are from the council. They are Mopidevi Venkata Ramana and Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose. They will continue as ministers till the council abolition bill gets the Parliament's nod. Interestingly, it was the father who breathed life into the council and it is the son who is abolishing it.
