Guzzlers and tipplers got tipsy and the bars and restaurants in the city of Hyderabad are laughing their way to the bank. This new years day, it's raining money for the excise department in Telangana. A record Rs 215 crore worth of liquor was sold on the New Year's Day alone and this sure is a record for sorts for the state.

According to the excise department, all the 19 major depots in the state witnessed a boom in the sales. The revenue has gone up. The sources say that 2,14,777 cases of liquor were sold in the state. Officials say that the revenue has gone up as the government has permitted sale of liquor till 1 am for the revellers. This has added to the revenues of the excise department.

Leading the state in liquor sales is Hyderabad city, which has two depots. Both the depots registered staggering revenues both because of increased sales and the hiked rates. The sales of this year have beaten the sales of last year, when Covid restrictions were still in force in some form or the other.

From Saturday afternoon itself, the sale of cakes, pastries, beer and food items have gone up. The trend continued till late in the evening on Sunday. Swiggy alone took 3.50 lakh orders for biryani on Saturday night. This is a record for the food delivery giant. Sources say the sales of condoms too has gone up on new year eve.
