Lockdown puts 2-wheeler industry on ventillator

The deadly second wave and the consequent lockdown have dealt a deathly blow to the two and three-wheeler sector. According to market sources, the sale of two wheelers and three wheelers has fallen down by 66 per cent. The lockdown and the reduction in the working hours have severely affected the two wheeler and three wheeler sector.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM), 9,95,097 units were sent to the distributors in April 2021, while in May the total units sent was just 3,52,717. The fall is by 66 per cent. While 6.67,000 units could be sold in April, the number fell down to 2.95 lakh. The fall is by 56 per cent. The scooter sales too have registered a staggering fall of 85 per cent. Only 5289 scooters were sold across the country in May. The fall is steep in the three wheeler sector. Compared to April, the fall in the sales is a staggering 91 per cent.

Severe implementation of the lockdown during the month of May has resulted in the steep fall of businesses in all sectors. The automobile sector, especially the two wheeler and three wheeler sector was the most affected. Industry sources said that in several units, automobile production was stopped to focus on the production of Oxygen to address the needs of the Covid patients.
