M Karunanidhi Passed Away At 94

Update: 2018-08-07 14:12 GMT
DMK Supremo and 5-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last at 6.10 pm on Tuesday.

The 94-Year-Old was admitted to Cauvery Hospital in Chennai on July 28th due to urinary tract infection and high fever. The best possible efforts put in by the team of doctors failed to improve his condition. Vital organs failed to respond to the treatment.

Political career of Karunanidhi lasted for six decades. The 'Kalaignar' is known for his scripting skills. He ended his film career for politics during the Dravidian movement led by Periyar EVR. It was after the death of DMK ideologue CN Annadurai in 1969, Karunanidhi became CM for the first time. He expelled MD Ramachandran from the party within three years and it resulted in the formation of AIADMK. While AIADMK-led by MGR formed government in 1977, It took Karunanidhi almost 12 years to regain power (1989) and that too after the death of Superstar. He, however, lost power too soon after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi by LTTE. He was back in power in 1996. Rajini's anti-Jayalalithaa stand & Corruption charges helped DMK a lot during that election. While Jaya won 2001 Polls, Karuna claimed victory in 2006 elections. Amma did manage to win in 2011 elections and retain power in 2016 polls as well.

DMK Leaders and Cadre have been on their way to the Cauvery Hospital to play tributes to their Leader. Huge traffic jams on the roads leading to the hospital has been witnessed. Tamil Nadu DGP announced high alert all over the state. He ordered the police force in the district to reach Chennai for making necessary security arrangements. Government ordered for shutdown of liquor shops. Huge police force was deployed at Karunanidhi residence in Gopalapuram. Anna Arivalayam asked it's MPs and Leaders in Delhi to reach Chennai as early as possible.
