Madurai Bench Rebukes Sourav Ganguly And Virat Kohli For Endorsing Online Gaming

After the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court issued directives to ban the online games, the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami brought a new ordinance to ban the online gaming antivirus in the state.

The ordinance signed by the governor Banwarilal Purohit says, people found involved in gaming activities will be fined a sum of Rs 5,000 along with an imprisonment of not less than six months.

Those who host the gaming activities will be slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 and two years imprisonment. The banned gaming activities include electronic transfer of funds and distribution of prize money.

'Due to online gaming, innocent people mainly youngsters are being cheated and some people have committed suicide. In order to avoid such incidents of suicide and protect innocent people from the evils of online gaming, the Government has submitted proposal to the Hon'ble Governor to promulgate an ordianance by amending the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act, 1930 (Tamil Nadu Act III of 1930), Chennai City Police Act, 1888 (Tamil Nadu Act III of 1888) and the Tamil Nadu District Police Act, 1859 (Tamil Nadu Act XXIV of 1859),' the press release issued by Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan read.

While directing the Tamil Nadu government to ban online gaming, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court found fault with Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli for promoting fantasy sports platforms.

The bench rebuked the star duo for misusing their star power. The reports claimed, the bench said they want to know if the celebrities should be held responsible for promoting the gaming platforms.

Tamil Nadu has now become the third southern state to ban online gaming activities after Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
