Make Aadhaar Mandatory for NRI Marriages

Update: 2017-09-13 16:58 GMT
An Inter-Ministerial Committee recommended Ministry of External Affairs to make Aadhaar mandatory for the registration of NRI Marriages. This move is intended to protect the rights of Indian women who are facing harassment from NRI Husbands in any form.

As of now, Indian Citizens and Foreigners with valid visas can enroll for an Aadhaar. The Unique Identification Authority of India is currently working on the Policy for Aadhaar enrolment of NRIs, Overseas Citizens of India and Individuals of Indian Origin.

The Panel suggested amendment of India's extradition treaties with foreign nations to include Domestic Violence as a criterion to seek custody or deportation of an accused. It also sought National Commission for Women (NCW) be made the nodal authority for handling marriage-related disputes. In addition, Special Teams consisting of officials of MEA, Home Affairs and WCD should be deputed in nearly 15 countries where such cases are frequently reported.

Retired Justice Arvind Goel was appointed as the chairman of Expert Panel on NRI Marriages.
