The grand old Congress which is one of the oldest parties in the world opened its door for reforms and allowing elections for the chief of the party from the non-Gandhi family is one of the big reforms. The historic elections saw Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge locking horns.
The historic elections were concluded recently and veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress with a thumping majority. The new chief took oath as the head of the grand old party today. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) saw a non-Gandhi family member becoming the chief after around 24 years.
Mallikarjun Kharge took oath in the presence of key leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, and others. He thanked everyone who voted for him and expressed his belief in making the party strong.
Kharge took over the leadership from Sonia Gandhi and thanked her for leading the party and making it strong. The veteran leader visited the Raj Ghat before taking over the chief post of the grand old party.
This is the first time Congress went for elections to elect the chief to lead it since its inception. Moreover, it has been a long time since a non-Gandhi family member became the President of the party. The last time a non-Gandhi family lead the pastry was Sitaram Kesri. In 1997 the former Rajya Sabha member received a good number of votes.
Mapanna Mallikarjun Kharge is one of the tallest leaders in the party. He held many posts as MLA, Minister, and Union Minister in his career. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha for around one year.
He is always dubbed as the strong loyalist of the Gandhi family and his loyal nature towards the Gandhi family is said to have worked in his favour in the election as the seniors in the party stood behind him and campaigned for him in the elections.
Mallikarjun Kharge has a great responsibility to set things back on track for the Congress party which is going through a big crisis. Since 2014 things are not going in Congress's way and the party is hoping for a bright future ahead.
