Modi-Mamta Meet:What's Behind It?

Update: 2020-01-11 04:28 GMT
Months after vitriolic attacks and criticism, firebrand CM of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. This will be their first meeting in many months.  Both will meet at the Raj Bhavan at around 4 PM.This has been officially confirmed by the West Bengal secretariat.

Interestingly, both will also share the stage at the 150th anniversary of the Kolkata Port Trust on January 12. The Union water transport minister Mansukh Mandaviya has personally met Mamta and invited her to the programme. This meeting is being viewed as a very significant political development in view of the animosity between both the leaders.

Significantly, Mamta has refused to attend the meeting of the Opposition parties at New Delhi to forge a front to oppose the Modi Government. She was reportedly unhappy at the uncharitable comments passed by the Congress and the CPM during the nation-wide bandh on January 8. She was upset at both the parties criticising her and her government during the bandh.

The CPM was quick to slam the meeting between Mamta and Modi. CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty said that this has exposed the double-tongued approach of the Trinamool Congress party. He said the CPM would oppose the proposed meeting.
