Minister wants Rahul Gandhi to marry a Dalit girl

Update: 2021-02-17 13:40 GMT
There is at least one politician who has taken Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's "Hum Do Hamare Do" slogan quite seriously. He is none other than Republican Party of India (Athawale group) member and minister in Modi government Ramdas Athawale.

He told Rahul Gandhi the other day in the Lok Sabha that this slogan is related to family life and quipped that if he wanted to promote the slogan, he should first get married. Athawale did not stop at that. He further said that Rahul Gandhi should set an example by marrying a Dalit girl.

This will help in fighting caste discrimination and help realise the dream of Mahatma Gandhi. He also said that Rahul Gandhi would be given a cash incentive for marrying outside his caste as per the norms fixed by his ministry.

The house went into peels of laughter at Athawale's comments. But, now the people are wondering whether Athawale's comments have any loaded political meaning. The political class is now debating as to what could be the real import of the minister's comments.
