In 1994, State Government issued a GO transferring Avilala Cheruvu in Tirumala to TUDA (Tirupati Urban Development Authority). Intellectuals Forum moved the Supreme Court accusing the government of taking a decision which poses a threat to the Water Body. In 2006, The Apex Court found fault with AP Government and passed an order that Avilala Cheruvu has to remain under the control of Irrigation Department.
On May 21st last year, AP CM Chandrababu Naidu took the decision to make Avilala Cheruvu a tourist attraction. Endowments Department passed order sanctioning permission for TTD to spend Rs 18.50 crore for the works of Avilala Cheruvu.
Within an year, The estimated budget for works of Avilala Cheruvu has been hiked to Rs 181.13 crore. A decision was taken to spend Rs 80.14 crore in the First Phase & Rs 100.99 crore in the Second Phase.
There were allegations of misuse of TTD funds in the name of beautification of Avilala Cheruvu. If the media reports are true, A person close to the TDP Leadership has obtained the contract.
