Modi's Hugs Fail To Impress Trump, Putin

Update: 2018-07-17 18:18 GMT
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is credited with a very pro-active role in foreign policy. He has been an inveterate tourist and has globe trotted during the four years of his rule. There are many occasions, when he slept on the flight and used the day time for meeting dignitaries. Modi is also known for his closeness with the heads of the state. His Hugplomacy has also become very famous. The charmer that he is, he has managed to cast a spell on dignitaries from around the world.

But, here's a shocker. He does not figure in the list of preferred leaders of the state in either US Prez Donald Trump's or Russiah president Vladimir Putin's call list. A Reuters data said that Trump had called up 40 heads of the state and made over 200 calls between January 2017 and July 6, 2018. Similarly, Putin too made around 190 calls to 50 heads of the state during the same time.

Most of Trump's calls were made to French president Macron, followed by British PM Therissa May and Japan's Shinzo Abe. As for Putin, he made most calls to Turkish president Recip Tayyib Erdogan. He made at least 28 calls. Kazakhistan was in the second position, while France, Germany and Israel come later.

Modi did not figure in their call data at the top. Both the leaders called Modi less than 10 times. So, Modi's warg hugs are not translating into growth in importance.

But, herein lies the catch. Both Putin and Trump did not make many calls to the second most powerful country in the world - China.
