Underworld don Abu Salem was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday after being convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. While Two other convicts (Tahir Merchant, Feroz Khan) were sentenced to death, Another convict Karimullah Khan received life term for involvement in the blasts which killed 257 people and injured over 700 others.
TADA Court also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on Abu Salem and Karimullah after being found guilty of murder, arms supply and few more criminal offences.
As many as 13 blasts happened at various parts of Mumbai on March 12th, 1993. TADA Court convicted 100 people in 2007 and later acquitted 23 out of them. Dawood Ibrahim, India's most wanted, has been absconding since the blasts happened. Mustafa Dossa, another mastermind of the blasts, died of heart attack following his conviction in June.
Abu Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005. It's because of this reason he can't be awarded death penalty despite very serious offences committed by him. It was Abu Salem who offered AK-56 rifle, 250 bullets & few hand grenades to Sanjay Dutt.
