Nirbhaya Convict Filed A Mercy Petition After Curative Plea Rejected

Following the curative petition rejected by the Supreme Court, one of the four convicts of Delhi Gang-rape case, Pawan Kumar Gupta has filed a mercy plea before President Ram Nath Kovind.

Pawan Kumar Gupta is the only convict in this case who had not exhausted any of his legal options. In his plea that he has filed last week, he requested the court to change his death sentence to life imprisonment.

Hours after his curative petition was dismissed by the apex court, Pawan filed a mercy petition before the President. Earlier the mercy petitions filed by the three other convicts, Mukesh Kumar Singh, Vinay Kumar Sharma, and Akshay Kumar were dismissed by the President.

Pawan has claimed his juvenility to seek commutation of death sentence to life imprisonment. Advocate AP Singh who represents the convicts in the case has sought an oral hearing on the curative plea in the open court on Sunday.

In his curative plea, Pawan pleaded the court that the school records state that on the day of the offense, his age was only 16 months and two months and added that "the age has not been determined in accordance with the procedures laid down under the Juvenile Justice Act".
