Update: 2014-08-06 04:44 GMT
Narendra Modi Government has begun the exercise to rescue the people who weren't successful in their attempt to commit suicide. This is an attempt to make sure such survivors doesn't end up in jail for taking the extreme step.

As per Section 309, People who are convicted of attempting suicide will be facing an imprisonment of 1 year. So, Ministry of Home Affairs is keen on erasing Section 309 of Indian Penal Code.

In 2013, 1.34 lakh people committed suicide. This means a suicide happens for every 15 hour. About 44% of suicides happens due to family issues and critical illness.

Law Commission has recommended scrapping of Section 309 finding fault with imprisonment of the people who overcomes the phase of ending their life. Hope, Centre gets rids of Section 309 as soon as possible.
