The issue came to the limelight when the Supreme Court expressed its dissatisfaction over the addressal of fewer Covid compensation claims. After the Supreme Court came down severely it was found out that the claims for compensation and the official Covid deaths have a huge difference.
States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab have a huge difference between the official casualty count and the claims the government got for the compensation.
Maharashtra's official stats say 1,41,737 people lost their lives to the virus. But the state got as many as 2,13,890 claims out of which 92,275 claims were approved by the government. BJP ruled Gujarat also has a similar trend.
While the official data says more than 10,000 people died of Covid, more than 89,000 claims were received and over 58,000 claims were cleared. There is a difference of nine folds between the official data and the claims.
Telugu state Telangana also reported a massive difference between the official toll of Covid deaths and the claims that were filed with the government for the compensation.
