Amid growing controversy over the local body elections, the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner(SEC) Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar has written a letter to Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan.
Reports claimed that Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar complained to the Governor against the resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly. During the winter sessions, the state Assembly passed a resolution against conducting the local body polls.
If we have to take anything from these media reports, in his letter to Governor, SEC maintained that the State Election Commission is an autonomous constitutional authority which also has the same power as the Election Commission of India
All these developments took place when SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar announced that local body elections will be held in February next year.
On the other hand, the Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is not ok with going for the much-anticipated local body elections in a few months.
Since the SEC announced that local body elections will be held in February, the AP government has been telling Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar that it is not the right time for the polls citing the Coronavirus outbreak.
Surprisingly, SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar postponed the elections in March, citing the same Coronavirus outbreak. Now the state government is giving the same reason.
