One year imprisonment for trying to attend Volleyball match

A British-Iranian woman detained by Iran police after trying to watch a men's volleyball match has been sentenced to a year in prison. Ghoncheh Ghavami(25), a law graduate from London, has attracted attention at the highest political level given her dual nationality.

Ghoncheh Ghavami currently holding Britain nationality. Britain expressed its concern after hearing reports of her jail sentence. Ms Ghavami was detained on June 20 this year at Azadi Stadium where Iran’s national volleyball team was to play Italy, after female fans and even women journalists were told they would not be allowed to watch led to a brief demonstration.  After the match Ghavami arrested and released. But police immediately arrested after few days taking her in to 41 days custody. So far, Ghavami has been held in the capital's notorious Evin Prison for 126 days. Last month she spent 14 days on hunger strike. As per Iran Law Women are also banned from attending football matches in Iran can lead to strict imprisonment as in this case.
