Our Hyderabadi politician and MIM boss Asaduddin Owaisi is the biggest headache for West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee these days. With Owaisi announcing that his party would contest the upcoming elections in West Bengal, Mamta is a tad worried. The reason? Owaisi will eat into the Muslim vote bank that Mamta has been guarding so strongly.
Owaisi, who now has considerable influence on the Seemanchal region in Bihar, which abuts West Bengal's Dinajpur, Malda and Coochbehar, is likely to put up candidates and fight the elections. The Muslims of Seemanchal share a lot in common with the North Bengal muslims. They have the same culture and in some cases, they speak a form of Bengali.
Owaisi's MIM has contested from 20 seats in Seemanchal and won five seats â all in Kishangunj district. The local MP too belongs to MIM. Owaisi has addressed over 65 meetings in the Seemanchal region. He had formed an alliance with Upen Kushwaha, Mayawati and others and ended up winning five seats. Now, he is planning to have a similar alliance in West Bengal. This means the Muslim vote bank of Mamta Banerjee would be breached this time.
