22,000 Indians Overstayed In US Last Year

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced as many as 22,000 Indians overstayed in US last year.

About 7,01,900 Foreigners who entered US either through Airport or Seaport overstayed during the period October 2016 to September 2017.

According to DHS, Over 10.7 lakh Indians visited US either through B-1, B-2 Visas which were sanctioned for Tourists or Business Purpose. About 14,204 out of them overstayed their visa. While 1,708 of these Indians left US after the expiry of visa, There is no record of 12,498 Indians leaving US till date.

About 1,27,435 Indian Students and Research Scholars reached US in 2017. 4,400 of these Indians overstayed in America. About 2,833 Indians are yet to reach their motherland.

When it comes to other categories of Non-Immigrants, Over 4 lakh Indians were likely to leave US last year. Whereas, 9,568 of them stayed beyond the expiry of visa. About 6,612 of these Indians are still staying in US illegally.

India feature in the Top 10 Nations whose citizens obtain US Visa legally and overstay illegally. For now, Percentage of Indians overstaying in US beyond the permissible limit isn't as high as that of few other nations.
