Former Punjab CM Returns Padma Vibhushan Award As Protest Against Government's Betrayal
The sports fraternity from Punjab stood in solidarity with the farmers who are peacefully staging protests against the three farm bills introduced by the Union government.
To show his support for the farmers, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal returned his Padma Vibhushan award, the second-highest civilian award.
The former Chief Minister said he returned his Padma Vibhushan award as a bid to protest against the Union government's "betrayal of farmers".
Earlier in September this year, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has severed its ties with the BJP and quit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against the Union government's farm bills.
With the SAD leader returning his Padma Vibhushan award, the BJP's former ally has made a statement that it will not compromise on the protests related to the controversial farm bills.
In his e-mail letter to the Honorable President, the former Chief Minister said he took the decision to return his award out of hurt and betrayed feelings created by the way farmers were being treated.
It has to be noted that ace sportspersons and coaches from Punjab earlier said that they support the farmers in the protests row. They said they will return the awards they received from the government and will march to Delhi.
