Prashant Bhushan Pays Re 1 Fine In Contempt Case

Update: 2020-09-14 10:40 GMT
Lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan, who was fined Re 1 fine by the Supreme Court for tweeting criticising Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and the top court, today paid the amount in the Supreme Court registry.

Bhushan said this doesn't mean that he is accepting the court's judgement. He filed a fresh petition on Saturday, seeking the right of appeal against the original criminal contempt cases. He also asked that his appeal should be heard by a larger and another bench of the Supreme Court.

"I am going to the Supreme Court registry to deposit Re 1 fine imposed on me in relation to the contempt of court case. That I am depositing the fine does not mean I am accepting the judgment. I will be filing a review petition against it today," he said.

The court had on August 31 fined Re 1 as a punishment. The apex court said Bhushan can face jail for three months and a ban from practising for three years if he doesn't pay the fine by September 15.
