If sources serve us right, the Congress Party is all set to take a leaf out of YS Rajasekhara Reddy and launch a massive padayatra to reach out to the voters. But unlike YSR's padayatra, which is limited to the undivided Andhra Pradesh, the proposed yatra would be from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and it would be led by no less a person than Rahul Gandhi himself.
The proposal for a nation-wide yatra has come up at the Chintan Shivir of the Congress Party, which is currently happening in Rajasthan's Udaipur. The yatra is being proposed for a period of one year. The proposal came from the sustained agitation committee of the Congress Party. The yatra would cover various main cities and the states of the country.
The last time such pan-India political yatras were was taken up was when former prime minister Chandrasekhar undertook his Bharat Yatra and also when BJP's LK Advani took out a yatra on Ayodhya issue. Titled Rama Rath Yatra, the yatra helped BJP to grow from a mere two MP seats to around 90 Lok Sabha seats. Similarly, Murli Manohar Joshi too organised Bharat Ekta Yatra to unfurl a Tricolour at Srinagar's Lal Chowk.
In the Telugu states, the last big yatra was performed by YS Jagan in 2017-18. The yatra covered 2500 km and 125 assembly constituencies in some 14 months. His father YS Rajasekhara Reddy undertook Praja Prasthanamfor three months and covered 1475 km.
