Make Cow Nation Animal: High Court

Update: 2017-05-31 16:05 GMT
Rajasthan High Court directed the State Government to hold talks with Centre to ensure Cow is being declared as a National Animal.

Justice Mahesh Chand Sharma stressed the need to make Cow a National Animal, just alike Nepal. Even increase of punishment for slaughters to life-imprisonment has been recommended. The single-judge bench even permitted any individual to approach it with PIL seeking declaration of cow as National Animal.

Mr.Sharma pointed out Article 48 of the Constitution gives powers for State Governments to prohibit slaughter of cattle and preserving of breeds. He declares State's Chief Secretary and Advocate General be declared as legal custodians of cow once it becomes National Animal.

High Court responded in this manner while hearing a case related to slaughter of over 100 cows at a government-run cowshed in Jaipur last year. This judgement came at the time when many states have been protesting Centre's ban on cow slaughter.
