The Afghanistan Cricket Board had dropped the names of the members of the final squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup on Thursday. However, the Cricket board and fans faced a big jolt with the decision of Rashid Khan that came as a big surprise to everyone.
Minutes after the Cricket Board announced the squad, Rashid Khan announced his resignation as the captain. He issued a statement in which he said, the decisions will come into effect immediately. Rashid Khan said that neither the Cricket Board nor the selection committee took his opinion before announcing the team.
Rashid Khan said he has the right to take part in the team selection being the skipper and the responsible person of the country. Without taking my opinion, the team was announced. I am stepping down as the skipper with immediate effect, Rashid Khan said in a statement he issued.
"As the captain and responsible person for the nation, I deserve the right to be part of the selection of the team. The selection committee and ACB has not obtained my consent for the team which has been announced by ACB media. I am taking the decision of stepping down from the role as captain of the Afghanistan T20 side effective immediately," Rashid Khan's statement reads.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board(ACB) had swung into action and announced Mohammad Nabi as the replacement of Rashid Khan to lead the team in the T 20 Tournament hosted by the United Arab Emirates. Nabi is also a senior player of Afghanistan like Rashid Khan.
Taking to Microblogging Site Twitter, Mohammad Nabi said he will admire the decision taken by the Afghanistan Cricket Board on his appointment as the skipper to lead the team in the tournament. 'At this critical stage, I admire the decision of ACB for the announcement of leading the National Cricket Team in T20 Format. InshaAllah together we will present a great picture of the Nation in the upcoming T20 World Cup,' his tweet reads.
