Untold Facts behind PV's appointment as PM

Former PM Manmohan Singh's media advisor Sanjay Baru's book '1991 How PV Narasimha Rao Made History' throws a light on the contributions of the former Prime Minister to boost Indian Economy. He claims to have got the idea of penning this book while addressing a meeting of the Hyderabad Management Association. When he asked the audience who is behind new economic policies in the country, They replied, 'Manmohan Singh…then few took the name of Chidambaram and Kamal Nath'. Noone mentioned the name of PV Narasimha Rao who is an architect of the economic reforms.

The Author opined then PM Chandra Sekhar was doing a good job but it was destiny which resulted in his replacement with PV Narasimha Rao in 1991. Although Sharad Pawar and Arjun Singh were in race, PV got the opportunity because of his loyalty to the Sonia's Family. Another reason was that Gandhi Family believed PV would follow its orders without fail. Age factor to worked in the favor of PV. At one point, Sonia considered making then President Shanjar Dayal Sharma as PM. Mr.Sharma turned down the offer due to his health issues.

After becoming PM, PV relied more on PC Alexandar who worked as chief secretary during Indira's rule. Although there was pressure on him to make Pranab Mukherjee as Finance Minister, PV felt there is need of a financial expert in that situation and decided to appoint Reserve Bank Governor IG Patel. Mr.Patel refused Cabinet Ministry. Finally, Manmohan Singh was inducted into cabinet as Finance Minister.

In a chapter, Sanjay Baru mentioned P Chindambaram had once resigned believing PV wouldn't accept it. To his shock, PV had accepted his resignation immediately and asked Chidambaram to announce it in the press meet.
