Rise of Social Media: Half of India Use it for Fact-Checking!

With time changing, the voice of people to get information changed. Earlier, people used to listen to the radio, and then newspapers emerged. As another big revolution in the channels of information, the electronic media took over and the live streaming of news changed the way the information is received at once.

Social media is the current trend now and the media is being used by millions of people. The rise in use of the internet and availability of internet at affordable rates are driving the massive rise in the popularity and craze of social media.

The popularity of social media reached a point that over half the population in India uses social media to check if the information is fact or not. The percentage of people who use social media for factual information is around 54 percent which is the highest for any nation. Mexico, South Africa, and Britain are in the next position.

The Oxford University Press (OUP), which is the largest university press in the world carried out a survey in five nations and found that people in India use social media for information Not just that, as many as 87 percent of Indians who share the information feel that they are sharing the correct information.

The news came out when the opposition parties are slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party for using social media for spreading false information. The grand old Congress party alleged that BJP entered into an understanding with social media giant Facebook and that is the reason why the platform is not taking any action against BJP leaders on their objectionable comments and posts.

BJP and the rise in social media go hand in hand in India. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, social media played a big role in boosting the BJP's image. BJP also tops the list of parties that make investments in social media campaigns.

The youth population consumes social media more in India. People between the age group of 25 to 44 use social media. Not less than 44 percent of people from the age group consume social media. Not just that, parents also use social media.
