The Covid lockdown is all set to affect the disbursement of Rythu Bandhu cheques in Telangana this time. Normally, the Rythu Bandhu cheques would have been distributed by May 10 to enable the farmers take up farm works soon after the monsoon. But, this time around, the cheque distribution has not started in the first place. Even getting the Rythu Bandhu amounts appears to be in doubt.
With the state government's economy in doldrums, there is every possibility that the government may not disburse the cheques this time. Even during the last time, the cheques were disbursed quite late and many of the cheques could not be presented in the banks as there were no funds. The farmers feel that it would be useful for them if the cheques were disbursed in May.
Last year too, the cheques could be disbursed only in June. By the time the cheques were realized and the money was deposited in their accounts, the farm works were almost over. A similar situation might occur this time too, agriculture department officials say. The TRS government has allocated Rs 14800 crore for the Rythu Bandhu scheme in this year's budget.
