As many as 16 young women in South Africa have bagged Scholarships by their Mayor for remaining Virgin. The move was intended to encourage young people to remain pure & focus on their academics.
Dudu Mazubuko, the mayor of Uthukela District municipality, said all the recipients had undergone necessary periodic exams to prove their virginity. He treats the Scholarships as nothing but saying Thank You to the young women and asks their to remain pure until they attain their degree.
The Mayor claims his intention was to encourage young women to focus on education rather then facing hardships due to pregnancies at an early age and sexually transmitted diseases.
However, South Africa's chairman for the Commission for Gender Equality Mfanozelwe Shozi doesn't support such a practice of scholarships for virgin women.
