Service Tax Department issued summons to Tennis star Sania Mirza for alleged tax evasion. She was even asked to appear before the Principal Commissioner of the Service Tax Office for presenting her side of the story.
Authorities say Rs 1 crore Sania received for being Telangana's brand ambassador falls under the Service Tax purview. As a result, Sania was asked to pay Service Tax of 14.5% besides interest and penalty.
Sania Mirza, however, condemns the Tax Evasion charges. She clarified Rs 1 crore sanctioned to her by the Telangana Government was a 'training incentive' but not for being the brand ambassador of the state. Instead of Sania, Her Chartered Accountant appeared before Service Tax Officials on Wednesday to clear the confusion.
Telangana Government appointed Sania Mirza as its brand ambassador in July 2014 and offered her Rs 1 crore towards expenses while preparing for major tourneys.
