Karnataka High Court on Wednesday imposed a stay on Sania Mirza's Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
Paralympian athlete HN Girisha who bagged silver at London 2012 Paralympics and bronze at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games was highly disappointed when the Indian Sports Ministry preferred Sania Mirza instead of him for the country's highest sporting honour.
HN Girisha claims himself as the top contender for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award with 90 points as per norms to choose a winner. Even though Sania Mirza won Grand Slam titles, Only the performance of Athletes at Olympics, Paralympics, Asiad, Commonwealth Games and World Championships from the year 2011 will be considered to pick up the winner as per Ministry's notification. The High-Jumper raises this point and moved Karnataka High Court seeking justice. Today, A stay order has been issued by the High Court and Sania can't receive the honour until she gets a relief in the next hearings.
