SC Asks Centre Is Still The Sedition Law Required

A sensational plea was filed at the Supreme Court, which challenges the constitutional validity of the sedition law. The top court on Thursday served notices to the Supreme Court over the petition.

During the hearing of the plea, the Supreme Court made sensational comments.Calling it a colonial law, the bench led by Chief Justice of Indian NV Ramana said the chances of misusing the law are very high.

Calling the sedition law a colonial law that was used by the British rulers to silence Mahatma Gandhi, the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court led by the honorable Chief Justice NV Ramana asked the union government whether the law is still necessary.

Expressing concerns over the non accountability of the sedition law, ths Apex Court said the section will be misused. The top court termed the sedition law to a saw in the hands of a carpenter which can cut down the entire forest.

The issue reached the top court with an Army man Major-General S G Vombatkere (Retd) moving the court seeking directives to struck the law that effects the freedom of speech.

The petitioner called the section Section 124-of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with the sedition law unconstitutional.

In the petition, the petitioner opined that we should consider the development of the law before using the law.

The Retired Major found fault aith slapping sedition charges against people who speak against the government and called the practice a gross violation of the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.

The sedition law is the much-talked about laws in the country currently as the number of cases filed on the sedition grounds are increasing rapidly.

Earlier, a filmmaker was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly sharing misappropriate information on Covid spread.

The sedition law began to hit the headlines since 2021 as the farmer's protests against the controversial Agriculture bills getting bigger and bigger.

A lot of cases were filed in connection with the toolkit' case. One such case was filed against climate activist Disha Ravi which has caught the attention of the nation.

A sedition case was filed against the ruling YSRCP MP Raghurama Krishnam Raju by the AP Government, making him the only politician to attract such a case in the recent times.
