SC serves notice to Centre over universal marriage age for men and men, seeks it response

The saffron party leader has filed yet another PIL which has made several heads turn. The Advocate has filed a petition on marriage age parity for men, women.

Senior advocate Geeta Luthra has appeared before the Supreme Court on the behalf of Ashwini Kumar Upadhyaya to file the petition on the universal marriage age for men and women.

While men are married at the age of 21, women will be married at 18. The practice has no scientific backup. It is only because of the patriarchal stereotypes, the petitioners said.

The Constitutional bench led by Chief Justice of India(CJI) SA Bobde has heard the petition today. During the hearing that took place through video conference, the bench took note of the arguments.

After the hearing, the Supreme Court has served notices to the Central government to seek its response on the transfer of petitions filed at Delhi and Rajasthan High Courts on 'Uniform Minimum Age of Marriage for Men and Women'

It has to be noted that, the union government led by Prime Minister has been battling the idea to increase the marriage age for women in the country. The proposal got momentum with the PIL.
