Veteran actor and Trinamool Congress MP Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday surrendered Rs 1.2 crore to Enforcement Directorate (ED). The amount is the remuneration he accepted to be the brand ambassador of Saradha Group.
Mithun Chakraborty's lawyers and few representatives reached ED's Office at Salt Lake in Kolkata to hand over a Demand Draft of the said amount to the officer who is investigating the Saradha Scam probe case.
When he was questioned by ED in May this year, Mithun Chakraborty said he has no role in the scam but just promoted the Saradha Group as a brand ambassador and he even promised to return the package he received for doing his job. The actor-turned-politician even submitted CDs and DVDs containing materials of his promotional campaign for the Saradha Group.
After the Saradha Group chit-fund scam came to light, CBI and ED stepped into action to send few ministers of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee's cabinet behind the bars for alleged involvement in the large scale fraud. Investors in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam have been cheated by the Saradha Group.
