As the polling process is drawing towards closure, hopes of achieving special status for Andhra Pradesh are growing. The BJP, which has categorically said that AP would never be given special status, could end up falling significantly short of the magic number to form the Government at the Centre. If no party gets a majority, AP would gain in importance and the MPs from Andhra Pradesh would become very critical for the Government formation.
In view of the electoral surveys and the mood of the people, it is being widely expected that the YSRCP would sweep the polls and emerge as the largest party in AP. In that event, the YSRCP would become a key player in the next government. Jagan has already indicated that he would only support those parties that would grand special status to AP. So, any party that wants to form the government at the Centre will have to grant special status. The Congress has already said it would grant special status if it came to power. But, given the Congress Party's weak position, a third front government too is a possibility. In that event, the YSRCP will become more powerful and can be in a commanding position.
So, any which way, special status appears to be a certainty for Andhra Pradesh.
