The Supreme Court has turned down the plea on banning social networking sites Facebook, WhatsApp etc. A Hyderabad-based NGO, Prajwala, has filed a PIL in Supreme Court, asking the  social networks to be banned as these platforms are not checking the content which is being shared on their platform.

In her plea she has mentioned about several recent incidents. She mentioned about the case of circulating videos of school girl rape in Mumbai using Whatsapp, and a case wherein a pedophile racket in Kerala was busted on Facebook.

She claimed that the rape videos propagated through Facebook and Whatsapp caused the distress to the victims and hence asked to ban the platforms.

The Supreme Court responding to the plea opined that its not possible to ban the platforms. However it has  asked the Modi government to examine if social networking platforms likeFacebook and Whatsapp can be prosecuted for offensive and vulgar content. The Centre had earlier told the Supreme Court that it was difficult to identify people uploading sex videos through mobile phones, although the same was possible if they did so from a computer.
