The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea seeking to restrain the Election Commission from announcing elections to GHMC. The petition was filed by a resident of Hyderabad and he asked SC to restrain EC from announcing GHMC notification on the grounds of alleged presence of duplicate and fake names in the voters list.
The petitioner - Mahesh from Hyderabad said that nearly 7.9 lakh voters were deleted from the electoral lists and sought for the issuance of the notification to be blocked. The petiitoner requested not to allow EC to reelase election notification until a comprehensive review is carried on the missing voters.
The bench responding to petition has asked the petitioner to approach the high court as it was an issue confined to the state. The court said that it could not intervene considering the weightiness of the issue and observed that these are allegations which are yet to be determined.
The court says that it was aware of the "gravity of the issue and it was a serious issue" and asked petitioner : "Why don't you go to the high court." The election notification to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation may be announced any time.
