Tamil Nadu AIADMK In Deep Infighting

Update: 2020-09-29 08:07 GMT
With the elections fast approaching, the politics in Tamil Nadu is hotting up. Two top leaders of AIADMK are now fighting for supremacy. Both want to be declared as the Chief Ministerial candidates. Both want the other group to give in.

The AIADMK is going to assembly elections for the first time after the demise of Purutchi Thalaivi Jayalalithaa. Though they have fought the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and bypolls in the same year, the results were a mixed bag. While the party lost badly in the Lok Sabha elections, it did reasonably well in the assembly elections. But, the next assembly elections are going to be crucial for the AIADMK.

The party has three major factions - one led by CM Palani Swamy and the second by Paneer Selvam. The third is led by Sasikala Natarajan. Unless these three factions come together, the party cannot hope to win over the DMK. But, instead of uniting, Palani Swamy and Paneerselvam groups have resorted to a show of strength at a party meeting. Paneerselvam argued that he was chosen by none other than Jalalalithaa as the CM, while Palaniswamy said that he enjoyed the support of the majority.

Now the party has decided that the issue would be sorted out by October 7 and that both the leaders would make a joint statement.  The party leaders feel that they have to put a united front to fight together and win the next elections. A defeat would mean that the party would be thrown to wolves, they feel.
