AP & Telangana Governments placed the request for increase in number of Assembly Seats in the respective states. While AP Government sought an enhancement up to 225 from 175, Telangana Government urged for a hike of 153 from existing 119. Even Section 26 of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 recommends delimitation of Assembly Constituencies in the two Telugu States after bifurcation.
Union Government, however, made it clear on Wednesday that there is no possibility of increasing Assembly seats anytime soon. Attorney General clarified that delimitation of Assembly constituencies will only happen in 2026 and amendment to constitution need to done if Centre decides to increase seats before it.
TDP MP Devendar Goud sought an reply from Union Home Ministry over delimitation of Constituencies. In response, Minister of State for Home Gangaram has given a written statement on the matter.
The decision of Centre brings new headaches to Ruling Parties in Telugu States. Both TDP and TRS encouraged defections expecting creation of new constituencies will give space for everyone to settle down. But, Centre ruined their hopes and these parties will have to deal with group wars now.
